Last Night’s show – Tinycakes, My Gold Mask, and the Dø at the Empty Bottle

What a great show.

The Tinycakes was just starting as we arrived.  Using basic beats and a deadpan delivery The Tinycakes offered up his clever poetry.  He also had some lighting installations put up.  I would like to see The Tinycakes again.  The song “I got lost in the dance moves” was meta and true and hilarious.  It described a moment that I have been in many times.

Me n @bunnymynost have been jamming on My Gold Mask (Chicago duo of Gretta Rochelle and Jack Armando, follow @mygoldmask) for a bit around the house, and that has done us very well.  But the live experience was even better.  Gretta’s vox are just awesome, and for just 2 people making noise, the set sounded very tight and very full.  I heard a super catchy song that is not on their myspace; maybe it is new.  Excellent songwriting and lyrics all around.  I was reminded a bit of Quix*O*tic which is a really good thing to be reminded of.

Sadly, Gretta and Jack removed my favorite article of clothing on each, respectively, after only the 2nd or 3rd song.  Gretta’s was a smoking pair of black wedge boots and Jack’s a blue, red, white and black flannel buttown down.  I think they can be forgiven as comfort is important.

Next up was the Dø (follow @thedoband) a duo from Paris/Helsinki.  They brought a drummer.  It was great.  Olivia’s vox were clear and plaintive, she wore these awesome earrings that looked like people from the men’s and women’s restroom signs.  Very catchy, very solid songwriting, and the playing was really tight.

It was a rainy Sunday night, but still, why were there not more people out to see bands like these?  Mysterious.  Felt very lucky to be among a relatively small, appreciative audience, but on the other hand these acts definitely have their shit together quite enough to enthrall larger audiences and it woulda been nice to see Chicago giving them that kinda support.
